Traditional Greek Moussakas Recipe From The Butchers Block

Recipe Ingredients

3 large aubergines
1kg potatoes
2 onions, finely chopped
1kg minced beef
1/2 cup white wine
3/4 cup olive oil
2 medium ripe tomatoes
Parsley, finely chopped
Salt and pepper
1/2 cup grated parmesan cheese
1 cup breadcrumbs
Olive oil (for frying) and Béchamel sauce


Serves 6-8 Heat the oil and sauté the onion with the minced beef. Add the wine and the peeled tomatoes and put through a food mill. Add the parsley, salt and pepper and let the meat sauce simmer for 15mins. Peel the potatoes, cut them and the aubergines into slices and fry them lightly in hot olive oil. Lay the potatoes on the bottom of a baking pan, salt them and add half of the aubergines. Pour the meat sauce over the aubergines and lay the reaming half over the top of the meat sauce. Cover the whole dish with the béchamel sauce and sprinkle with cheese.
